Foundations for Flourishing in a Medical Career
Junior Scholar Program

Purpose

Based on over 50 years of combined experience in the healthcare field, medical education and professional leadership development, Dr. Walter Lee and colleagues have witnessed an increase of healthcare professionals lacking the fundamental skills and understanding to flourish in this vocation. Since 2010, they have led workshops and programs that bring these fundamentals to future and current healthcare professionals, impacting hundreds of lives for the better.

Especially designed for Junior College / Polytechnic students who are interested in the medical professions, the program will provide the key foundational qualities and skills, mentorship, and coaching to enter into and flourish in a career as a healthcare professional. Program faculty will share key aspects, insights and characteristics that have distinguished students that flourish in medicine from their peers. As part of this program, there is also a parent component that shares parenting skills that best support and guide their teen in this critical life stage and beyond. 

Target audience:  Select group of students interested in a healthcare career and their parents

This is a five-month program that has three parts:

       1) 3.5 day in person Seminar - Details below

       2) Virtually held meetings for 4 months - focused on continued mentoring/coaching in how to apply                the concepts/lessons learned at the Seminar (one for parents and one for students)

​       3) Development and completion of service project

Upon successful completion of the program requirements - Students will be certified as a

Junior Scholar of the International Phronesis Institute

 As a Junior Scholar, they have continued access to program faculty for advice, mentoring, and support.

  • What is unique about this program?
    This program is unique in several ways. It is a small selected group of participants that involves both the student and parent so that they can learn together the foundations of flourishing as a healthcare professional. Furthermore, this program is focused not only on giving you insights and skills in entering the healthcare field, but also establish key habits to be successful through training and practice. The expert faculty, led by Dr. Walter Lee, share their decades of experience and leadership in medical education and are committed to your holistic growth as a future healthcare professional.
  • What does the program fee include and doesn't include?
    The program fee is inclusive of both the student and one parent. It covers the following: * 3.5 days in-person seminar with engagement among distinguished program faculty * Hotel accommodations for the seminar (Deluxe twin room for 3 nights). * Breakfast and lunch during the seminar * All group activity tickets for group trips/tours * Personal assessments and debrief of reports * Coaching sessions during the Seminar * Monthly virtually held meetings for 4 months (one for parents and one for students) that is focused on continued mentorship and guidance. * Mentoring of service project and reflective essay. It does not include local transportation costs to, during ,and from the 3.5 day seminar. It does not cover incidental hotel charges or services (e.g. spa) and dinners/purchase of alcohol. Upgrades for the hotel room are also not covered. Any expenses regarding the service project are also not part of the program fee.
  • Why is there a limit on the participants?
    The program is limited to a small group in order to maximize the interactions and active engagement with the seminar faculty and activities. The program is designed on open and trusting relationships and this can only happen in a limited sized group. This also supports building the foundations of relationships that will be the basis of future program activities and discussions. Finally, this small group enables the seminar faculty to provide the mentoring and coaching that leads to transformative growth for both the parent and student.
  • Where is this program being held?
    This year, we are excited to host our seminar at the 5-star VOCO Orchard Singapore Hotel. Program Fee includes reservation for three nights (Wednesday - Friday) in a deluxe twin room. The hotel has facilities that include a spa, fitness center and rooftop pool. Once the program begins on Wednesday morning, all meals are included during the duration of the program.   • Do I have to stay at the venue?
    This seminar is meant to provide space and time to focus on learning about the key aspects that help students enter and flourish as a trainees and medical professional. By staying at the venue, it helps to not only decrease distractions to this end but also allow for increased interactions with other participants and faculty in the program. It also allows for the student and parent quality time to grow in their relationship.
  • What is the application process?
    Interested applicants sign up on the website to be notified when the application process begins. The applicant and parent complete a short application form with short answer questions. This includes a non-refundable application fee. Select applicants will be selected for a on-line 30 minute interview. This includes both applicant and parent who will be attending. Participants will be notified whether or not they are accepted into the program. Program payment due dates will be shared at that time. The application process is rolling until the spaces are filled.
